What is the role of philosophy in our modern age? We no longer believe in grand narratives (for the most part!), and empirical sciences seem to hold the keys to all existing and future knowledge. So what about philosophy – is there any place for it left? Although one of the oldest of disciplines that used to encompass all the branches of inquiry that have become specialist sciences with the passage of time, at least since the middle of the 20th century philosophy has received a variety of ‘farewells’. Equally, there have been many voices arguing in favour of its relevance.

Today I share a video from one of my favourite philosophy channels on YouTube where philosophy professor Dr. Ellie Anderson unpacks key ideas from philosopher Jürgen Habermas’s 1983 writing “Philosophy as Stand-In and Interpreter”. Enjoy!

Keeping up the “Spreading the Word” tradition, I hope to share an insightful and mind-broadening article, podcast episode or video every weekend. Humans have always turned and returned to storytelling to find meaning. My end-of-week “Spreading the Word” posts are an online sharing of meaningful stories.

keep exploring and storytelling!
