Spreading the Word: On Being Yourself

This Friday, I share with you two short videos. Something inspiring for the weekend. And perhaps something to think about. I’ve decided that Fridays are good days to post my ‘Spreading the Word’ pieces. So, from now on, they will appear on Fridays instead of Thursdays.

It is a somewhat striking and very sad truth that, for many of us, we are our own worst enimies. Noone else can hurt us as much as our own cruel inner critic. Why? Because this critic is a part of ourselves. Who can get closer to us than we? Something worth thinking about next time you start criticising or punishing yourself for not being good enough.

Having a healthy level of self-criticism is a goal worth striving for. Yet, why do we go overboard with self-criticism? Could it be that we are convinced we are not good enough unless we can fit into a certain role and play it well? Might we be chasing other people’s dreams and expectations, or doing our best to follow a path that has been collectively approved as the right one? The scary and liberating thing is that only we can create our own happiness. Scary – because these will always be unchartered waters before we sail and explore them. Liberating – because we actually do not have to try and fit ourselves into some preexisting, assigned role in order to feel good about our lives.

Keeping up the “Spreading the Word” tradition, every Friday, I hope to share with you an article I’ve read or a video I’ve seen and considered it to be inspiring or enlightening. I feel it is important to take good care not just of our physical but also of our mental well-being. Humans have always turned and returned to storytelling. My Fridays’ “Spreading the Word” articles are an online version of sharing worthwhile stories.

keep exploring and storytelling!
