Spreading the Word: Importance of Meaning-Making

Why is it much more important to understand than to know? Why are all the ‘why’ questions significant, and how an understanding of reasons shapes our actions? I found these two articles that I would like to share with you today: on understanding and on ‘why’. In each article, the authors offer their take on the crucial role that understanding and meaning-creation play in our lives. Enjoy!

We’re simply far more likely to accept a change if we understand the reason for it. Interestingly, our acceptance seems to hinge less on how much we like the reason and more on how much sense the reason makes to us. Even if the change fails to benefit us—even if it causes us harm in some way—if our sense of fairness is satisfied, we’re far more likely to accept and even embrace it.

Keeping up the “Spreading the Word” tradition, I hope to share an insightful and thought-provoking article or video every weekend. I feel it is essential to care for our physical and mental well-being. Humans have always turned and returned to storytelling to find meaning. My weekends’ “Spreading the Word” posts are an online version of sharing meaningful stories.

keep exploring and storytelling!
