Have you noticed a difference in your thought process when reading and listening? Recent research suggests there is indeed a difference. We tend to think more intuitively, more automatically when we listen to something and more deliberately and analytically when we read something. While it is not entirely clear why this is so, one possible clue might lie in our development. We learn a language in early childhood pretty effortlessly (which includes lots of listening!), but it takes a lot more work and conscious effort to learn to read. It could be that this habit of more intentional and analytical thought gets more tightly linked with the reading process even as we mature and no longer pay attention to the reading skill itself. Curious to know more? Go ahead, and read the following article on psyche.

Keeping up the “Spreading the Word” tradition, I hope to share an insightful and mind-broadening article, podcast episode or video every weekend. Humans have always turned and returned to storytelling to find meaning. My end-of-week “Spreading the Word” posts are an online sharing of meaningful stories.
keep exploring and storytelling!
